ATTEND IN-PERSON OR ONLINE This class is being offered in a hybrid format, with participants being able to choose in advance if they will attend in person or online via Zoom.
THE COURSE Your instructor is an expert in the area of solar power, having taught post graduate classes at Saint Martins University. His large solar installation on the KissIntel has provided a wealth of practical approaches to utilizing the sun to enhance the boating experience. You will learn the terminology of solar power, what factors influence success for your project, what you can expect from a variety of designs, an outline of cost factors, and even includes a tour of the solar system aboard the KissIntel, if desired. While not a DIY manual, the class should prepare prospective boaters for informed discussions with installers and vendors. This class is 2 hours in length and has no prerequisites.
A TRADITION For nearly 15 years, the Olympia Yacht Club has been conducting classes for our members and other local boaters. The 2024 series of electrical-related courses has now been scheduled, and will be conducted in person at the OYC clubhouse in Olympia. One of our foundational principles is to encourage the science of good seamanship and navigation and thus we are opening these classes to any boater wishing to learn more on these topics.
OUR INSTRUCTOR The developer and instructor of these classes is past commodore Jerry Budelman, whose qualifications include retired Intel executive, adjunct professor of engineering, holder of over 20 patents and a lifetime instructor and inventor. He loves to teach with an interactive and participatory style.
REGISTER EARLY Space is limited, so register early! We ask that you register at least one week before the class if possible. Late registrations will be accepted - space allowing - but late registrants may not receive a copy of the course material. A PDF file is also available.
HOSPITALITY Coffee, tea and other basic refreshments will be provided.
LUNCH If you are staying for the afternoon course, lunch will be on your own from noon to 1:30 pm. Explore area restaurants or bring a brown bag lunch. Olympia Yacht Club is located adjacent to Bayview Thriftway which has an excellent deli. Order a sandwich ahead for pick-up or head over after the morning course to order your lunch and bring it back to the clubhouse for informal conversation with other participants.
